Continuing a long religious tradition, the Parish of St. Lazarus celebrates the Feast of St. Roque – the “Patron Saint against Plague” – starting with a solemn mass at St. Lazarus Church. It is followed by a procession featuring a statue of St. Roque, and which passes through the streets in the historic St. Lazarus area. Most Catholic communities around the world celebrate the Feast of St. Roque on August 17th, but in Macao it is celebrated on the second Sunday of July in commemoration of an outbreak of plague that hit the city in the 19th century. Legend has it that, thanks to the saint’s intervention, the outbreak was contained and ultimately extinguished.
