The Dragon Boat Festival is traditionally celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It commemorates Qu Yuan, a poet of ancient China said to have staged a patriotic gesture against corruption by drowning himself. Nowadays, the celebrations revolve round the hugely popular Macao International Dragon Boat Races, contested on Nam Van Lake. A number of local and international teams participate across a range of competition classes, in what has become one of the city’s favourite outdoor international sporting events.
