The annual Procession of St. Anthony marks the anniversary of the death – on June 13th, 1231 – of Saint Anthony of Padua. He was also known as Anthony of Lisbon, and is particularly venerated around the world among Portuguese-speaking communities. To observe the solemn occasion, Macao’s Catholic devotees hold a special mass at St. Anthony’s Church. It is followed by a procession towards the nearby Camões Garden before worshippers re-enter the church.
