Fireworks and firecrackers are indispensable to Chinese New Year celebrations, as their loud cracking noises are used to scare away evil spirits. To allow residents and tourists to enjoy firecrackers safely, the Macao Government each year sets up two designated areas – one on Macao peninsula and the other in Taipa – where people can buy and set off fireworks and firecrackers in safety. The temporary venues include special zones for hoisting up and setting off – sometimes by the hundreds – long strings of firecrackers, with the aim of warding off bad luck.
