Lunar New Year Markets

A major tradition for Chinese New Year in Macao is giving fresh flowers, potted plants and bouquets as gifts, as a symbol of good luck, and so special temporary flower markets spring up across the city in this period, bursting at the seams with people and produce – especially on Chinese New Year’s Eve. Plants in hot demand during this period include mandarin trees, thought to be a token of good fortune and prosperity; stems of “lucky” bamboo, for their claimed auspicious qualities for a happy home; and pussy willow, cherry and plum blossoms, and orchids. The markets also sell all sorts of festive items relevant to the New Year, from toys to clothing and decorative items.
